The bonus DVD interview with Willems reveals the shocking truth about his true feelings for pandas-hilarious. As the credits roll, the DVD adds uproarious content: Panda and Alligator conspire to build a jet pack, and the viewer is treated to Alligator's precarious flight. The DVD's read-along subtitles and the CD's page-turning prompts make this early reader/picture book crossover, with its simple language and short chapters, an even more valuable beginning reader tool. Beloved author-illustrator Mo Willems has created a funny and tender portrait of friendship that readers of any age will love. But what happens when Amanda brings home a specialand not entirely welcomesurprise The result might be unexpected indeed. Alligator's thinking cap sounds are aptly interpreted as those of a high-scoring pinball game. Sometimes Alligator surprises Amanda by eating them. The action is accented by folksy, mostly solo banjo accompaniment with crescendos that add voices and whistling. The dramatic narration and the voice of Panda are presented by Willems's wife, Cher. The author's daughter, Trixie, gives just the right voice to Amanda while Willems provides the perfect Alligator. Close-ups of the comical covers of the books Amanda is reading are another treat for viewers. Movement adds humor to this already amusing work the way Alligator fiddles with his tail, the positions Amanda assumes while reading, and the characters' dancing are agreeably emphasized. PreS-Gr 2-The film version of Mo Willems's winning title (HarperCollins, 2011) is true to the picture book's spare atmosphere, employing plenty of white space to highlight the main characters and action. Discovering that she excels at the daily monotone of restocks and product promotions and difficult customers, Keiko finds contentment and self-respect among the brightly lit aisles and hot food cabinets. Her salvation appears when, aged 18, she secures herself a job at the local Smile Mart convenience store and, paying conscientious attention to the training video, realises “it was the first time anyone had ever taught me how to accomplish a normal facial expression and manner of speech”. Another time she asks her mother if she can eat a dead budgie found in the park. At school she bashes a boy over the head with a shovel to stop him fighting. Keiko has been a worry to her family all her life, bullied and friendless, her behaviour sometimes even chilling. N ot all novel titles manage so very literally to describe the contents, but this one – unapologetically deadpan yet enticingly comic – absolutely does. Amid the toll of funerary bells and the creep and click of mortuary-servitors, the truth is confessed. Each of them has a tale to tell of a narrow escape from death. On a misty cemetery world, three strangers are drawn together through mysterious circumstances. I feel The Woman In The Walls by Phil Kelly was the standout novella of the collection, but read it for yourself and make up your own mind.Ī chilling mosaic novel by masters of their craft. These three novellas are creepy, visceral and packed with very human drama, action and terror. My first foray into the subgenre of Warhammer Horror did not disappointment, either. But as I continue to explore the Black Library, as it’s known, I’m finding more and more gems in its vast collection, especially amongst the ‘Domestic 40K’ titles – character- rather than war-driven narratives that are easily as good as many commercial SciFi books of recent years. You may think you can only enjoy Warhammer fiction if you are a fan of the universe. Starting the list with something a bit out of left-field. First there is the author's dawning realization that the platform is being manipulated by some very bad actors. It's a story that begins with a series of rude awakenings. Zucked is McNamee's intimate reckoning with the catastrophic failure of the head of one of the world's most powerful companies to face up to the damage he is doing. Still a large shareholder in Facebook, he had every good reason to stay on the bright side. He had mentored many tech leaders in his illustrious career as an investor, but few things had made him prouder, or been better for his fund's bottom line, than his early service to Mark Zuckerberg. If you had told Roger McNamee three years ago that he would soon be devoting himself to stopping Facebook from destroying democracy, he would have howled with laughter. This is the dramatic story of how a noted tech venture capitalist, an early mentor to Mark Zuckerberg and investor in his company, woke up to the serious damage Facebook was doing to our society and set out to try to stop it. Conlang fans may wince a little at the gratuitous apostrophes, but the fantasy words sprinkled throughout didn't distract, and did led a nice extra level of flavor to the world. Our two main characters, John and Kyle are both interesting and three dimensional, which is important considering they share time as POV characters. I found the world building to be particularly interesting, with some fresh ideas and a macabre tint to everything, including talking bones, blood magic, the execution of witches, and so forth. After a mixed up delivery, John and his two friends are sucked into the fantasy world, and have to figure out how to get themselves out, while Kyle pursues them but finds himself lost and confused upon arriving at the other side of the gate. This was a solidly written first book, where a good portion of the premise is set up, and a handful of diverse players are put on the stage. A fresh fantasy story with some interesting worldbuilding and promising setup for the rest of the series. The basic premise is that Kyle is an agent from another world, sent to keep a close watch on John, a man from Earth who is unaware that he is actually something of a weapon for the people in this other world. |
